Our intention when we left South Fork was to travel east until
we reached Hwy 25, which would eventually take us north through Colorado,
Wyoming and on into Montana. We planned
to stay near La Veta on the edge of the San Isabel National Forest. We had heard about a fire near Walsenburg,
Colorado, but mistakenly thought La Veta was far enough away to be out of the
fire zone. Surprise, the entire area
around La Veta was in the evacuation area.
Our first look at the East Peak fire
The fire is at about 7,000 acres.
If you look close where the smoke is thickest you can see flames.
DC 10 making a drop.
Boy, we are just having no luck in Colorado. We did pull off the road at a wayside to take
pictures of the fire and just as we were getting ready to pull back onto the
road a police car pulled to a stop in the middle of the road and stopped all
traffic. It seems there had been an
accident and the road was being closed while they took care of the clean up. Jim didn’t mind as it gave him a chance to
watch the DC10 make drops of retardant on the fire. About an hour later we were allowed to head
on up the road. We ended up spending the
night at a Rest area just north of Pueblo, Colorado.
I wonder if the driver of the car was looking at the fire instead of the road?
